Question:

The final project of a unit is worth 60%. It's a scaffolded assignment, with part 1 worth 10%, part 2 worth 20%, and part 3 (the final submission) worth 30%. How should that be reflected in the grade book?

Solution:

As the final project consists of three sub-items, the three parts will need to add up to 100% of the Final Project. To do so we need to convert the percentages for part 1 (10 out of 60 =16.6%), part 2 (20 out of 60 = 33.3%) and part 3 (30 out of 60 =  50%).

The scheduled unit on Paradigm has the Final Project as a single assessment item scheduled, worth 60%.

The result transfer from the Moodle Gradebook to Paradigm at the end of the semester needs to include the Total of the Final Project, not the individual items of the scaffolded assignment.

To set it up on Moodle, go to the Gradebook of the Moodle course:

  1. Click on ‘Add category’ at the bottom of the page

  1. Add a grade category as a child of the final project, e.g. OT017-712 – Final Project – Part 3 (50%)
For the category name, write out the codes and name as it will help later when you create the Turnitin assessment item.

  1. Once you’ve created all three parts, tick the box next to the weighting and add the percentages, then click ‘save changes’

  2. When creating the assignment activity (e.g. Turnitin ), select the applicable grade category in the grade section, e.g. OT016-712 – Final Project – Part 1 (16.6%)
