The Moderation Portal supports the Moodle course creation for multi-streamed units and for units taught in multi-modes (e.g. on-campus & off-campus). The Moodle courses are created with the relevant Paradigm Scheduled Unit IDs and Scheduled Assessment IDs to allow for student unit enrolments to be synced and for assessment results to be transferred back to Paradigm at the end of the semester.
A Moodle course is created with a group per unit (e.g. a group for NT00-512 and a group for NT001-812) to support access restrictions for resources and activities as well as a fully configured gradebook, reflecting the assessment methods and weightings.
Backed up content from a previous Moodle course can be simply restored into the new Moodle course.
Colleges with a configured Moodle/Paradigm integration have access to this on the Moderation Portal.
To create a Moodle course, go to Moodle Courses (https://moderation.actheology.edu.au/moodle-courses/)
Click on 'Create'.
Select if you would like to create a new Moodle Course (default) or link up to an existing Moodle Course

Create new Moodle Course
Select a Moodle Course Preset (1)
Refer to the article How to create a Moodle course preset (https://actheology.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/51000327449-how-to-create-a-moodle-course-preset) for more details.
Pick the Moodle Course Preset (2) and click 'Select' (3)
Click on 'Add units to Moodle course' (4).
Select the units (UQAF records) that you would like to combine in a Moodle course (5) and click Add (6).
Note: UQAFs with a Mode of Delivery of 'On Campus & Off Campus' have two scheduled units on Paradigm, one for each mode of delivery. For the Moodle course, those two scheduled units are kept together to avoid splitting groups, grade categories, assessments, etc. as they are treated as 'one cohort'.
Select the Gradebook creation type: Complete is default
Optional: add an Audit Scheduled Unit ID (Note it needs to be a distinct scheduled unit on Paradigm - other than the ones selected above).
Optional:
Overwrite the Moodle Course Full Name or Short Name
Default is No.
Confirm (8) and click on 'Submit' (9).
The Moderation Portal will now create the Moodle course. It may take up to 1 minute.
During the creation process the Moodle course status shows pending.
Once the Moodle course is created, the Moodle course contact will receive an email confirmation email with links to the Moodle course and the gradebook.
The created Moodle courses appear now with a status of 'created'. Links to the Moodle course (A) and gradebook (B) are also available.
Link to an existing Moodle Course
An existing Moodle course can be used to link it up with Scheduled Units from Paradigm. This may be used when a Moodle course was already in place before the UQAFs were approved and/or the UQAFs were not scheduled on Paradigm.
To link to an existing Moodle course, old ID numbers will need to be removed from the Moodle course, Groups and Gradebook Categories
remove the Course idnumber in the Moodle course | remove the Groups | remove exiting Gradebook Categories |
Tip: rename the Moodle course before you link up, so the new name is recorded on the Moderation Portal | Groups are going to be recreated with the ID numbers in place, remove the old groups to avoid duplication. Tip: you can select multiple groups at the same time | Remove the top grade category for the unit level and each child grade category for the assessment items. Any graded activities (assignments) linked to a grade category will be orphaned. The graded activities can be linked back to a grade category once the Moodle course is linked up. |
1) select "Link to an existing Moodle course"
2) Enter the Moodle Course ID (the ID can be found in the URL of the Moodle course).
3) click on "Check Moodle Course"
4) A check will run in the background and will return a response from the Moodle site to show what the Moodle course name is and if the Moodle Course idnumber is empty.
Only if the Moodle Course idnumber is empty, the Next button will appear. If the Moodle Course idnumber is not empty, go to your Moodle site and remove the idnumber for the unit and re-run the check.
5) Click on Next
6) Select the UQAFs/Scheduled Units
7) Confirm
8) Click on "Submit".
Checks
Please check that the new Moodle course should now have the Paradigm IDs displayed as ID numbers (do not change the Course ID number as this will interfere with enrolment syncs and result transfers).
The course full name or short name can be changed but the changes will not be reflected on the Moderation Portal (it does not sync back to the Moderation Portal).
A group is created for each unit (UQAF) and if opted for in the Moodle course presets, an Audit group is created as well.
The created gradebook reflects the assessment names and weighting as recorded on the Moderation Portal and Paradigm.
Each unit (UQAF) will have it's own parent grade category (e.g. AS003-612) with the relevant assessment items as child grade categories (Essay 50%).
When adding graded activities (e.g. quiz or Turnitin), select the grade category for the relevant assessment to ensure it counts towards the correct assessment and the grade is calculated correctly.
Note, if multiple graded activities are added to an assessment grade category, they will count in equal ratio (e.g. 10 quizzes will count each as a 10th towards the particular grade category) by default unless otherwise set in the grade category settings (e.g. drop lowest 2).
